From “Stuff”:  Rescue services said a man “saved himself” by activating an emergency beacon on his home-built canoe.

A Northland Emergency Services Trust helicopter found the severely hypothermic 57-year-old Hamilton man clinging to his capsized canoe about 9pm on Wednesday.

The Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand said had the man not been carrying a distress beacon he would not have survived in Ripiro Beach’s waters, 20 kilometers north of the North Head entrance to Kaipara Harbour.

A helicopter crew member was winched down to the “exhausted” man, rescue centre coordinator Dave Wilson said.
